PEBBLE BEACH, Ca. – At this week’s PURE Insurance Championship golf tournament, Chevron is shooting to raise $220,000 through its Eagles for Education Initiative to benefit science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education programs in Northern California. Chevron will donate $6,000 per every eagle made during the tournament, with proceeds supporting over 22,000 students in local STEM programs, including The First Tee, CHISPA, Greenfield Community Science Workshop and El Camino Real Fútbol League.

The Championship gives 81 top junior golfers from The First Tee the opportunity to play alongside 81 PGA Tour Champion players—including Bernhard Langer, Scott McCarron, Kirk Triplett, Davis Love III, and Sir Nick Faldo—in a competition for the Pro-Junior title. The First Tee tournament participants will also have access to the Chevron STEM Zone, an interactive exhibit that illustrates STEM concepts through real-world applications like golf, and brings STEM education to life through exciting, hands-on activities. Over the course of the week, Chevron’s STEM Zone will be open to the public and host over 1,700 students from local communities like Monterey, Salinas and Seaside.

Chevron’s Eagles for Education initiative and partnership with the PURE Insurance Championship exemplify the company’s ongoing commitment to increasing STEM education quality and access. Chevron provides resources, such as the STEM Zone, to encourage students to pursue STEM careers, and to train these future leaders in skills crucial to the well-paying jobs of the future. Chevron’s Eagles for Education program has raised over $7.2 million for non-profits such as The First Tee since 2011.

“It’s inspiring to see youth from our community and participants from The First Tee engaging in STEM Zone activities,” said Steve John, Tournament Director and Monterey Peninsula Foundation CEO. “They have so much fun digging into and playing around with the science behind their favorite sports.”

The First Tee is a youth development organization, which promotes character-building and healthy life choices through the lessons of golf. Using golf as a model, young people in The First Tee program are taught life-long values—honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgement—to help them live confidently and nobly on and off the golf course.
