Chevron makes $100,000 donation for First Tee College Scholarships as part of Chevron’s Closest to the Pin Challenge at Pebble Beach

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2023) – In conjunction with Tuesday night’s Pairings Party in Pebble Beach, the Chevron Closest to the Pin Challenge was held at the Pebble Beach Golf Academy with $100,000 donated for First Tee College Scholarships.

With the support from last night’s Chevron’s Closest to the Pin Challenge, scholarships will be awarded to individuals who have demonstrated character and work ethic on the golf course and in the classroom, both of which will help them succeed at schools across the country. Chevron has also donated $1,000 each to the five girls and five boys who hit closest to the pin at the Pairings Party in their name to their local First Tee chapter.

Chevron’s engagement with First Tee began when it became a Trustee in 2012, and its lifetime investment of gifts and pledges has now reached over $3 million.

“This year’s diverse group of Scholars represents 21 First Tee chapters across 18 states. The Scholars’ future aspirations range from becoming doctors and lawyers to studying economics, biometric engineering, computer science, professional golf management, and journalism,” said Steve John, CEO of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, annual host of the PURE Insurance Championship.

The First Tee College Scholarship aims to support alumni after high school graduation by pairing each Scholar with a trained adult mentor to provide guidance throughout their college careers and beyond.

“Chevron is proud of the growth and impact of the First Tee over the past 25 years. Their mission to help young people build life skills and strengthen their character is critical to our society and future,” stated Hewitt Pate, Vice President and General Counsel for Chevron Corporation.

The PURE Insurance Championship, featuring top professionals on the PGA TOUR Champions’ circuit as well as teenagers from First Tee chapters from around the country and teams of amateurs, will tee off Friday and Saturday on Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. The third and final round will be held solely at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Sunday, where 24 First Tee juniors compete based on their 36-hole performance. The tournament will crown one male and one female First Tee Junior Champion on Sunday.

Chaired by Clint Eastwood, the event will be televised nationally on Golf Channel. The public will be admitted free to view play on Pebble Beach Golf Links (no spectating at Spyglass Hill). Complimentary parking is offered at Special Events Field/Lot 10 in Pebble Beach, with shuttle service provided directly to the course.

More than 1,000 teens from First Tee have played in the PURE Insurance Championship, experiencing the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet, play, and be mentored by PGA TOUR Champions players and amateurs in the field.

First Tee is a youth development organization that teaches life skills and helps kids and teens build their strength of character through golf. The PURE Insurance Championship is one of several national opportunities First Tee Headquarters provides to encourage and motivate participants as they progress through the program and toward higher education opportunities.
